McLean, VA — Mars, Inc. is marking its 115th anniversary five generations after Frank C. Mars began making and selling buttercream candies from his home kitchen in Tacoma, WA.

The family-owned company has grown from a home-based confectionery operation into a global business generating more than $65 billion in annual sales, according to Mars. The company reports approximately 170,000 associates working across more than 3,600 sites.

Mars’ portfolio has also expanded beyond its confectionery roots to include more than 130 brands spanning snacking, food and nutrition, pet food, veterinary care, and science and diagnostics.

“Our 115-year history reflects the enduring power of our values and the long-term perspective that comes with being family-owned,” says Poul Weihrauch, CEO of Mars. “For generations, Mars has grown by evolving with the needs of people and pets while staying true to the principles that define who we are.”

The company’s operating philosophy traces back to the 1940s, when Forrest Mars, Sr. outlined an objective of creating mutual benefits among the company’s stakeholders. Mars formally codified its Five Principles — Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom — in 1980. The company says the principles continue to guide its approach to operations and long-term growth.

During its history, Mars has expanded its portfolio to include brands such as M&M’s, Ben’s Original, Extra, Pedigree and Royal Canin, while also building businesses in veterinary services and diagnostics.

The company’s expansion continues with its acquisition of Kellanova, which added a portfolio of global snacking brands to the Mars business.

“As we look ahead, we remain focused on helping to create a better world for people, pets and the planet,” Weihrauch says.
