Chicago — Mars, Inc. has partnered with Perfect Day, Inc. to launch a new sustainability-inspired chocolate product, CO2COA.
According to the company, the product is its first earth-friendly and animal-free chocolate innovation in the U.S. The name CO2COA is a way to pay homage to its Rainforest Alliance-Certified cocoa and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) in product sourcing, according to the company.

We’re excited to collaborate with Perfect Day and continue to explore the potential of alternative proteins to help create a more delicious and sustainable future.”
Mars CO2COA sources Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa and uses Perfect Day animal-free dairy protein, making it entirely lactose- and cholesterol-free. The chocolate is also wrapped in fiber-based earth-friendly packaging.
Rowe explains that to meet the current market’s quick turnaround, the product was in development for less than a year before it launched.
The precision fermentation process Perfect Day uses to create its nature-identical dairy protein uses up to 99 percent less water and produces up to 97 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions, compared to traditional production methods, according to the company.

A single variety of the CO2COA bars is currently available for purchase online at co2coa.com, carrying an SRP of $2.39. Rowe notes that based on consumer feedback it will explore adding products to the line and expanding into retail.
