Today Show Shares Holiday Stats From NCA

New York — Yesterday, the Today Show kicked off a special holiday edition of its By The Numbers segment with data from NCA’s newly released Getting to Know Seasonal Chocolate & Candy Consumers. NBC Business & Data Reporter Brian Cheungz shared from that report that 93 percent of consumers will share candy and chocolate over the holiday season.

He also pointed out that 55 percent of consumers eat the straight end of the candy cane first, another stat provided by NCA. Today Show hosts then debated if this was in fact the correct way to eat candy canes.

Other holiday data shared by Cheungz included:

  • 50,000 — Number of lights on the Rockefeller Center Tree
  • 25 million — Number of fresh trees sold annually
  • 36 feet — World’s Largest Menorah
  • 30 feet — World’s Largest Kenara
  • 1.3 billion — Number of holiday cards sent annually, according to Hallmark
  • 85 — Percent of Americans who buy gifts
  • 1890s — Origin of White Elephant swap parties
  • $512 million — Record gross for a holiday movie, The Grinch in 2018
